Buster did the first set and I did the second set. After we finished Art said in his classic tone, "you got a passport?" I said yes, why? "Because we're gonna go to Japan. You wanna go?" Well, we did 6 weeks in Japan and I must say that it was a very special trip. We performed throughout Japan.

Betty Carter,Paris 1997 Unfortunately 1974 was the year of the energy crisis in Japan and some of the halls that we performed in were very cold. One hall was so cold that the
E-string on the bass just broke in half.
Now that's cold!! We returned to
New York , stayed 24 hours then flew
to Europe for another 6 weeks.
Then returned to New York to tour
the United States for a month, then returned to New York to work
the Village Gate for a month. This was the cycle.

Also in 1974 I met Betty Carter . We became good friends that lasted till her untimely death in 1998. We worked together in 1974-75. During this period , I met Woody Shaw. Many people found him to be too difficult to deal with but for some reason, we got along quite well. We would read orchestral scores together, such as Bartok's piano concerto, Kodaly's Hàry Janos suite, in which you can hear Woody's homage to Kodaly in his composition "Zoltan". We practiced The Bach Cello Suites together trumpet and bass( a nice sound by the way) and in general did a lot of playing together. We toured a lot and were together for many years.
